Poder means “to be able to” in Spanish and this organization is perfectly named! Poder Learning Center is dedicated to not only helping Spanish-speaking individuals to learn English through a tuition-free program, but also to providing opportunities for work. Located in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, Poder helps more than 350 Latino adults each week, and has helped almost 7,000 since opening its doors in 1997. Besides developing their English, participants can work on writing, math, and computer skills, too. Poder partners with Oprima-1 Contact Center. For those who qualify, attendees are employed to work 6 hours per day at the contact center, and spend 2 hours working on English and computer skills. Initially, attendees may work primarily with Spanish-speaking clients and then, as their English skills improve, they work with English-speaking customers. An exceptional opportunity not to be missed!
